On July 1, my dear golden retriever Blue died in my arms after 12 1/2 years of devoted love and friendship. He was thrilled to walk with me in blizzards. He adored beating me to the end of the pool on broiling July days. He was a huge polar bear of a dog, a sweet but courageous giant, an irreplaceable gem and when he lied lifeless in the vet’s van, I crawled in to hug him. I could not let go.
