Google in The Sky With Diamonds

In one way, it’s like the birth of Christ. It set up a line in history that separates all that came before and after it.
That would be the emergence, the rise, of Google.
It’s not the power of the search, per se, or the exceptionalism of its business model, but more the pervasive omnipresence of it all. Many of the decisions we make at MSCO for our firm and our clients, are driven by a force we never see and by a black box algorithm we don’t truly understand. It bothers me—not from a privacy standpoint or some off the charts conspiracy theory because I am not a hand wringing whiner–that as businesspeople we have to make decisions like pilots navigating through fog.
The issues are real and confounding:
* What are the Google Bots really looking for today?
* How does that differ from last week?
* Is the flavor of the month “content rich” or “authority based?”
* Who ranks authority?
* Why can Google earth see us but we can’t see it?
* How come Larry and Sergey never appear on camera?
* Is Schmidt a front man?
This invisible Google force is too much to comprehend. When you pick a fight with the world’s largest company, Apple, what will they do? Send you a defective iPad? If you upset Microsoft, what will be their revenge? Send an even worse version of Broken Windows? But if you do what Google thinks is
“evil”– a code they have never defined– will your SEO drop through the trap door?
Will MSCO’s, which is so high in part because we launched our website before the birth of lord Google? I’ll know as soon as this Blog is posted, because Google is everywhere.
When I gaze at the August night and see what I think is a shooting star, is it really “Google In The Sky With Diamonds?”
