I gave a speech the other night at a CBS event my company, MSCO, sponsored. The host introduced me with a grand recounting of my accomplishments to which the audience responded with enthusiastic cheers.

It was more than kind and respectful and it made me feel proud, to a point. I say “to a point,” because I know the dark side of my background you don’t find on Wikipedia.

There is no such thing as The Truth. As we move through life, passing by the scholars, the clerics, the men and women of God and of infinite wisdom, the Harvard faculty, the guardians of etiquette, the moral standard bearers, the authors of the Business Rules, we should view them all as merchants in a grand bazaar, competing for our attention, our adherence and our dollars.

Sometimes, the power of marketing is a curse. A plague. A near sin.
